Overview — English

Mount Agung is the highest peak (3,142 meters) and the most sacred geographical site in Bali. Balinese Hindus consider it a replica of Mount Meru, the central axis of the universe. Due to its sacred status, trekking is strictly prohibited during major religious ceremonies at the temples on its slopes, such as Besakih or Pasar Agung.

Climbing Mount Agung is a strenuous physical expedition, not a casual tourist hike. It is significantly steeper and more demanding than the popular Mount Batur. Treks typically begin around midnight to reach the summit by sunrise. There are two main routes: the Pura Pasar Agung trail (shorter, 4-5 hours up, ending at the crater rim) and the Pura Besakih trail (longer, 6-8 hours up, reaching the true, absolute summit). Hiring an experienced local guide is now mandatory for safety and cultural reasons.

Travel Tips
